The Sulphur Industry
The Greeks called it “theion”, the Romans “sulphur” and the Anglo-Saxons “brimstone” – regardless of its name one thing is certain, sulphur is vital for life.
Produced all over the world, most sulphur is obtained as a co-product from oil and gas production. The largest production occurs where sulphur-rich gas and oil is processed and refined.
Over half of elemental sulphur production is traded internationally and Canada is one of the largest exporters.
